Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Penelope presents a modern twist on Homer’s Odyssey in an iconoclastic 21st-century song cycle that deftly weaves pop, indie rock, and classical elements. Sung by Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond), Ellen McLaughlin’s text takes the point of view of Penelope, Odysseus’ faithful wife, who waits at home, wondering if her husband will ever return, dead or alive. Updated to a modern setting, Penelope’s long-lost husband turns up unexpectedly, emotionally damaged after years spent at war. In an attempt to rebuild his memory, she reads aloud to him from Homer’s Odyssey.

Canadian composer-guitarist Amy Brandon opens the concert with flesh projektor, reimagining the traditional classical guitar through the mediation of augmented reality technology.
