Musicians arrive at their signature sounds through all sorts of influences. For jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan, that collection of sounds comes from far afield — he’s a fan of progressive metal bands like Tool and Meshuggah — as well as from his backyard. Hamasyan was born in Armenia, moved to Los Angeles and New York, then eventually returned to his homeland to get more in touch with his roots.

Hamasyan has developed a unique compositional voice imbued with lyricism and rich harmony, punctuated by heavy, kaleidoscopic grooves. Joined by bassist Evan Marien and Nate Wood, the trio comes to WNMF to present a rich program featuring improvisations and selections from the composer’s growing discography.
