Li Keur, Riel’s Heart of the North

Dr. Suzanne Steele, libretto
Neil Weisensel, composer
Julian Pellicano, conductor

Li Keur, Riel’s Heart of the North, a new music theatre work written by Métis poet/librettist Suzanne Steele (Gaudry/Fayant) and Winnipeg composer Neil Weisensel, is in five languages (Cree-Michif, French-Michif, Saulteaux, French and English). Li Keur, based on archival research, reimagines Louis Riel’s ‘missing’ years (1870-72) and his love for the ‘heart of the north’—the land, his people, his nation and a previously unknown woman.

With five vocal soloists, a narrator, Michif choirs, fiddler, dancers, and symphony orchestra, this new work is a cross-cultural collaboration written in the spirit of truth and reconciliation, and heralds the Métis renaissance of the 21st century.
